Many filmmakers will explain the first film they ever produced was in the home, it didn’t cost them anything, other than the cost of the film along with a camera that they were already in possession of. Even Steven Spielberg shot his first film utilizing a Super 8mm camera. Oh, and by the way it was a film of his train set crashing! Typical! It is really simple to find books and data on basic film making techniques, just not so easy to find financing for film making.
It has become a nearly scary mission to find finance for young or upcoming filmmakers, and ultimately everything is determined by the film making budget. In most cases though, if the film is from the low budget variety, as well as the idea is different, you should not have too much difficulty financing it.
With that being said however, finding finance to get a film is often as tasking as actually making the film. You are likely to need a business plan first of all, so before you approach anyone to fund your film making efforts, get the business plan together. The company plan should include a film making budget breakdown, who the intended audience is, income projection, marketing plan, synopsis, biographies and what possibility of sales the film with have.
Investors to approach include both film and non-film industry investors. Non-film industry investors are usually speaking individuals who would like to see their name up in lights. You could offer them a credit such as “executive producer”, to have them keen on the idea, and you might also have a rich relative, say Uncle Bob the person you could approach. The draw-back with this is the fact that, they probably have very little knowledge of how things work in the film industry plus they can make your daily life difficult should you film will not reach the Oscars. Film industry investors are groups of people that provide an understanding of the Kia Jam, and finance film making as a matter of course. These could be studios, distributors, broadcasters or people who will invest to make money through the film. These groups of people understand the film making industry and probably won’t expect and Oscar, and definitely will at a minimum desire a return of investment.
Non-film industry investors include banks, rich family members, raising funds, and truth be told your charge card! Many confident filmmakers have tried their bank card to good success for financing a small budget film.
To conclude, one word of advice is obtain a good lawyer, preferably anyone who has a bit expertise in the film making industry, that can take care of your interests. Film making funding is a reasonably complex process and you need to know regarding your rights particularly with regards to signing distribution deals.
I used to think that the film students had too little desire for Film Budgeting and Costs (of any kind). Not anymore. Not long ago i did a survey of film students at a respected film school. Listed here are the results in the survey:
Over 80% from the students said they felt it absolutely was essential to know more about budgeting and exactly how it affected their careers as filmmakers. Film & Video production is probably the biggest industries on earth (close to ljlscd manufacturing, of course). The wide spread utilization of digital medium has created a new opportunity. That opportunity, although more affordable than the Hollywood style film productions we’ve grown used to, remains costly and needs financing. How can you get that financing? Where would you start?
Answer: You begin using the basics of Film Budgeting, Cost Reporting and incredibly simple Business Plans. When you can calculate a centerpiece, or discover ways to run a camera, a Film Budget is simple.
Based upon my experience within the last twenty years in the film industry, I will confidently say: 1. Graduates from Film Study programs who be aware of basics of film & video production money (Budgeting, Cost Reporting and Business Plans) will see they are able to take on more responsibility in their film & video projects, and 2. as a result may have more lucrative careers than their peers who haven’t learned to prepare Film Budgets, who don’t understand any production’s Cost Report and who never saw an easy Business Strategy.
